The Smiley Scheme applies to consumer-facing businesses
The Smiley Scheme is the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration’s way of publishing the results of inspection visits to businesses that sell food directly to consumers. This includes, for example, supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, and similar businesses. After each inspection visit, the company receives an inspection report, which is summarized as a smiley. The smiley must be displayed visibly at the entrance, and the latest inspection reports can always be found at findsmiley.dk. The purpose is to make it easy for consumers to see whether a business has food safety under control before they shop or eat there.
B2B companies do not receive a smiley but are still subject to inspection
Companies that sell to other businesses rather than directly to consumers, including wholesalers and manufacturers of food contact materials, are subject to the same food safety inspections, but their inspection results are reported using a rating scale from 1-4 rather than the well-known consumer-facing smiley display. Inspection visits are generally unannounced and examine areas such as hygiene, internal control procedures, and material documentation.
As with consumer-facing businesses, the latest inspection reports are published at findsmiley.dk. You simply need to look for a rating rather than a smiling face.
