The need for a new approach
Traditional bed washing typically relies on steam and chemical disinfectants. This places high demands on operations, handling, and the working environment, and also results in a complex, multi-step process.
There was therefore a need to explore whether an alternative technology could:
- Maintain the same level of hygiene
- Simplify operations
- Reduce dependence on chemicals
- Be integrated into existing tunnel systems
Joint development
The solution was developed through close collaboration between NATDIS and SEMI STAAL, combining expertise in disinfection technology and tunnel systems.
The result is a UVC solution that can be directly integrated into existing washing tunnels, where both beds and mattresses are effectively treated during the process.
Effective disinfection with UVC
The UVC system is designed with strategically positioned light sources to ensure that all surfaces are exposed – including areas that can be difficult to reach, such as edges, corners, and under mattress flaps.
For mattresses, the solution is supplemented with ionized air, which supports treatment of surfaces and hard-to-reach areas.
The system features intelligent control and automatically adjusts output based on operating conditions, ensuring stable performance and optimal energy use.
Reduced energy consumption and CO₂ emissions
The UVC solution significantly reduces energy consumption compared to traditional steam-based systems. This also results in a markedly lower CO₂ footprint in daily operations.

Tested and documented in real-world conditions
The UVC solution has been tested under realistic operating conditions in an existing tunnel installation within a hospital environment.
Its effectiveness has been verified through third-party microbiological testing conducted by an accredited laboratory in accordance with applicable standards.
The results demonstrate:
- Up to 99.99% reduction of relevant microorganisms, including MRSA
- A level of disinfection comparable to traditional steam- and chemical-based methods
- Stable and reliable operation within the existing tunnel setup
This confirms that UVC can function as an effective alternative to conventional disinfection processes – without compromising hygiene standards.
Advantages of UVC in bed washing
The UVC solution provides a range of operational and practical advantages:
- No handling of chemical disinfectants
- Consistent and automated process
- Instant disinfection with no waiting time
- Effective treatment of complex surfaces
- Minimal integration into existing systems
- Stable and reliable operation
A future-proof solution
The collaboration between NATDIS and SEMI STAAL demonstrates how UVC technology can be integrated into existing washing processes to create a simpler and more robust solution.
The result is a modern disinfection method that combines high hygiene standards with easier day-to-day operation.
