Tested and validated in bacterial culture production at Chr. Hansen (now part of Novonesis)

At Novonesis, UVC disinfection is an approved and documented method for preventing cross-contamination via surfaces. In bacterial culture production, even low levels of contamination and cross‑contamination can have a significant impact on product quality and process stability. As part of implementing a mobile UVC solution, targeted test programs were conducted to document the effectiveness of UVC on surfaces – both under controlled conditions and in daily operation.

Requirements for disinfection in demanding environments

Production at Novonesis involves handling dried bacterial cultures with stringent requirements for cleanliness and process control – including effective management and prevention of cross‑contamination between processes and surfaces.

A solution was therefore required that could:

  • Ensure high disinfection efficiency on surfaces
  • Reduce the risk of cross‑contamination
  • Function as a primary disinfection method
  • Perform effectively in complex production environments
  • Be validated through testing

Testing UVC in practice

To validate the solution, three test phases were conducted, including both controlled measurements and testing under realistic operating conditions.

The system consisted of a mobile UVC unit equipped with 8 high‑output lamps, where the applied dose was adjusted to meet the required disinfection level.

Documented disinfection performance

The test results demonstrated a very high level of effectiveness:

  • In most tests, complete reduction to zero was achieved
  • In individual cases, levels were reduced from over 300 to 3
  • The overall target of minimum 99% reduction was achieved – and in several cases exceeded

In practical production tests – including in areas with a high contamination risk – full effect was achieved at all measurement points, except in hard‑to‑reach areas with deep crevices.

 

Performance in complex production environments

The tests included environments with:

  • High particle load
  • Risk of shadow zones
  • Uneven and rough surfaces

The results demonstrate that UVC technology can be applied effectively even under challenging conditions, when the solution is correctly designed and implemented.

The conclusion of the testing program was that the UVC solution delivered the expected performance – and in several cases exceeded the defined targets.

This confirms that UVC can serve as a reliable and effective method for surface disinfection in industrial environments with high hygiene requirements.
